Part #4 Blogging in 20 minutes or less

Step 4: Give yourself a time limit

As I said before, you will see on my blog that there has been quite a bit of time elapse between some of my blog posts. This is because I would sometimes sit down and start writing and I would find myself taking hours to get something written. So the next time I needed to write a post I would remember how long it took the last time and I would tell myself that I didn’t have time to do it. This would go on for several days or even weeks before I felt I had the time to do it again. What a waste of a good blog and several ideas that I had failed to write down.

And then there were times when I would start writing and not be completely satisfied with what I had come up with and so rather than the post not be “perfect” I would post nothing at all. We are all human and frankly I would rather spend my time reading from or listening to or watching a video from someone who is real and that has great information than I would trying to pick out some imperfection on their blog. Now mind you as a publisher I have a tendency to notice misspelled words so I am not suggesting that you just type something out and post it. It should be proofed and any obvious changes made but don’t kill your brain cells trying to create the perfect post.

Part #5 is the last in this series and it is coming soon. Just sign up for my RSS and you will be notified when it is posted.

ping.fmUsing Ping.fm to help market your book

Watch this video to learn how to post messages use Ping.fm to all of your social networking sites at once.

Ping.fm will save you a lot of time when using social media to market you and your book. As you market yourself as an authority and build your authority status you will need all the time you can get. How to use Ping.fm

I use Ping.fm almost daily

As an author and a publisher at Sortis Publishing I use this service whenever I am on the road or just away from my computer. I can send a text to ping.fm using my blackberry and it automatically goes out to all of my social networking sites. That way when I am out with the kids and I have a thought or an idea I want to share about building your Authority Status I don’t have to stop and write it down so I can post it later. I just pull out the phone and send it out to everyone.

As you write your book you can also use bits and pieces to build really good articles and then use this service to distribute them to your various bogs as well. I hope you like the video and I hope you use ping.fm to help save time.

Making Money with Your Book

Now, what we would like to do here is give you some insight regarding making money with your book. Think about this…if you want to create a “Guru Status” and that is the main reason why you are writing or have written a book then the sale of books is not the only way you are going to make money. In fact, you almost surely will end up making more money than what you will make selling your books by gaining more notoriety and exposure by having written the book. You can look forward to being able to calendar more speaking engagements, offering paid seminars, training and consulting gigs and by being able to charge higher rates for your expertise once you are a published author.

Generating Interest for Your Book

Some of the unique aspects of a Sortis Publishing experience include:

  • offering a broad range of online marketing;
  • providing other avenues of expertise such as Social Networking, Amazon.com campaigns, Media contacts for radio and television
  • generating a wide circle of interest in your book that extends beyond that generated by brick and mortar book stores who have limited shelf space.

How to create the layout of your book

The layout or format of your book is just as important as the cover in order for it to be visually pleasing to your reader. Your font should be easy on the eyes and pretty plain and the spacing should not be to close. Your readers will enjoy what you have written much more when they don’t have to exert themselves trying to follow jumbled up sentences. Unless you are writing a fiction novel I would suggest using pop out boxes with key phrases from your book throughout your layout. This gives the eyes a break and takes out some of the monotony of seeing page after page of words. Make sure you have plenty of space for your margins as well. You will be surprised at how many pages can be added to your books layout by simply having a slightly larger margin around your text. More pages will make your book more substantial to your reader and more likely to buy it rather than a smaller book next to it on the shelf due to the simple fact that more pages must mean more information or story and they want the most bang for their buck. Of course you will want to check with your printer and see where their price breaks are and then judge whether you want to have fewer pages or a lower cost for your book.

Defining Your Niche

Are you an expert in a well defined niche? If not then you should think about refining what you are all about. This will help you in many ways, mainly it will differentiate you from everyone else (or at least most) out there who are hocking their expertise, it will allow you to refine your marketing strategy and only target those that are looking for your exact talents and it will allow you to hone your skills and truly become an expert.

First you will need to check out your competition thoroughly and determine what it is that they are offering. Do an online search and visit at least the top ten websites of those you consider competitors. Define what their niches are and then decide where you can develop a niche within a niche and focus on that area as your area of expertise.

Make sure there is a market for your new niche. Is the targeted market large enough? Make sure they have the money to spend on your niche expertise and then do some testing in that market before you go all out in your marketing efforts. If things aren’t working out then re-define your market.

Write your book based on your newly defined niche.
