Gilbert, AZ – Sortis Publishing is the first to use video phone for live television interview. This is a first in the publishing industry as well as a first in the video phone and television industries.

On January 27th 2011 Sortis Publishing set up a live video phone interview with author and Attorney General Mark Shurtleff. The interview was done with AZTV in Arizona during their AM Arizona morning show with Tonya Mock and Lew Rees.

First time video phone used for live television interview is used

“This is the first time to our knowledge that a live on air interview has been done using a video phone. We have done numerous online searches for anything regarding an event like this and we have come up with nothing. This is a first!” says Mike Webb who is the owner of Sortis Publishing. ”I had the idea of using this method of doing interviews after seeing the phone demonstrated and the implications it could have in my business”. Authors with Sortis Publishing can now do live TV interviews in a very cost effective way for both the publisher and the TV station.

Better quality with video phone for live television interview

“There are other methods of doing live TV interviews such as the free service that everyone knows about that you use through your computer, but the quality was not nearly as good as what we were able to get using the video phone” said Mike Webb.

The interview with Attorney General Mark Shurtleff was centered on his new book “Am I Not a Man? The Dred Scott Story”, which has just been released and is published by Sortis Publishing. The book is available at online retailers as well as through the publisher’s website.

You can see the video and find out more about the interview and video phone by clicking here.

Sortis Publishing plans to use the video phone again for interviews with their authors and we plan to work directly with TV stations around the country to facilitate these cost effective live video phone interviews.

Part #4 Blogging in 20 minutes or less

Step 4: Give yourself a time limit

As I said before, you will see on my blog that there has been quite a bit of time elapse between some of my blog posts. This is because I would sometimes sit down and start writing and I would find myself taking hours to get something written. So the next time I needed to write a post I would remember how long it took the last time and I would tell myself that I didn’t have time to do it. This would go on for several days or even weeks before I felt I had the time to do it again. What a waste of a good blog and several ideas that I had failed to write down.

And then there were times when I would start writing and not be completely satisfied with what I had come up with and so rather than the post not be “perfect” I would post nothing at all. We are all human and frankly I would rather spend my time reading from or listening to or watching a video from someone who is real and that has great information than I would trying to pick out some imperfection on their blog. Now mind you as a publisher I have a tendency to notice misspelled words so I am not suggesting that you just type something out and post it. It should be proofed and any obvious changes made but don’t kill your brain cells trying to create the perfect post.

Part #5 is the last in this series and it is coming soon. Just sign up for my RSS and you will be notified when it is posted.

Defining Your Niche

Are you an expert in a well defined niche? If not then you should think about refining what you are all about. This will help you in many ways, mainly it will differentiate you from everyone else (or at least most) out there who are hocking their expertise, it will allow you to refine your marketing strategy and only target those that are looking for your exact talents and it will allow you to hone your skills and truly become an expert.

First you will need to check out your competition thoroughly and determine what it is that they are offering. Do an online search and visit at least the top ten websites of those you consider competitors. Define what their niches are and then decide where you can develop a niche within a niche and focus on that area as your area of expertise.

Make sure there is a market for your new niche. Is the targeted market large enough? Make sure they have the money to spend on your niche expertise and then do some testing in that market before you go all out in your marketing efforts. If things aren’t working out then re-define your market.

Write your book based on your newly defined niche.

What Retailers Want

Retail Bookstores are more likely to carry a book that has proven its ability to sell, with pre sales and a good marketing plan being a big factor in their decision. Retailers almost always want the right to return books that are not selling, which can cause a huge problem for the author. Imagine, getting a large order through your distributor for several hundred books from a national retail bookstore and then having to take them back. This will be very costly and you may end up with a ton of books that you can’t move fast enough. Then you have to provide storage for the books, labor for moving them and restocking them. In fact even if a retailer accepts the book it must sell through the author and distributors efforts or it may very well be removed from the retailer’s shelf.

So it is crucial that you as the author are willing to work, work, work, at getting exposure for you and your book and create sales in order to make everyone happy and of course make any money.

What Publishers Want

Well let’s see…First of all publishers want a darn good book. But that’s obvious right? If your book is the same mundane information about the same old topic that is just being regurgitated in the same way that the other 12 books on the retail bookshelf about your topic then that is NOT what publishers want. Unless of course there is something about YOU that is different, new, fresh or just really interesting and can be used to offer a twist to the buying public. For example, if you are writing a book about dog training then you better have invented some awesome new 100% full proof, even a 5 year old can do it method or else you probably are not going to get very far with most publishers. Or maybe you want to teach an age old method of dog training that works but YOUR twist is that you were actually raised by a pack of dogs, then you probably have a winner and you will have publishers beating your door down to get at your book.

In this day and age with so many books being written about so many topics you need to be as original as you possibly can and you need to make yourself as marketable as an expert as you can.

Publishers also want to work with authors that are not only marketable themselves but that will actually take a lead role in doing the marketing. Almost gone are the days that most people think about the publishing industry and being an author. Many people think that they can write a book and present it to a few publishers and then wait for a call from one of them offering a large sum of money in advance with royalties on the back end just waiting to be made. In fact, with most books not selling out of their first printing it is getting harder and harder for new authors to get offers from publishers at all.

Publishers want YOU the author to be able to market yourself on your own time and usually at your own expense to generate sales. For example, an author who has written a book aimed at a niche or subject in the business world and is actively doing seminars, speaking, consulting etc… is much more likely to get published than an author who although may be an expert at what they are writing about with years of experience but is not getting any exposure in their target market. So if we use our dog training example, the author who is actually doing dog training on a regular basis and is getting exposure through pet stores or is creating opportunities for themselves will get much further than an author that has written the book and is now waiting for something to happen. Even if you’re only interested in offering your services in a limited area you need to be out there drumming up interest in you before you get your book published.

Publishers are also more interested in books that do not need a total rewrite or extensive editing to get them up to par and ready for printing. So anything you can do to have your book professionally edited prior to submission to a publisher will help. However, don’t get all attached to your book and have set in your mind that it is perfect because most likely your publisher/editor is going to suggest some changes be made. Sometimes they will strongly recommend certain changes be made that you may not agree with. You may want to be offended and think “How dare they question my writing” or “Who do they think they are? I’m the expert not them”. My suggestion is that you take a deep breath and think about what they are saying and be certain that you can’t live with the changes before making waves. Remember, they are the experts when it comes to offering a book to the public that the public will actually want to buy. They have a market and their job is to give their market what they want. Otherwise they would end up spending money on a book that will never turn a profit.
